Celebrate Cinco de Mayo With a Dog-Friendly Pawty

By now you’re probably aware, at Link AKC we take celebrating with our dogs very seriously. We will use any excuse to host a pup-friendly pawty. With Cinco de Mayo coming up, we’ve gathered some fun ideas to help you throw a fiesta that your furry friend will be begging to attend!

Snack for the Pups!

The folks over at Pet Safe shared a Mexican treat recipe that your dog will surely love. Here’s what you’ll need:

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 cup black beans

½ cup peanut butter

½ cup cooked corn

16 oz. plain yogurt

1 tablespoon honey

First off, set your oven to 350°F. Take 1 cup of whole wheat flour and 1 cup of black beans. Mix them in a food processor and pat the mixture in your hands to form a dough.

Next up, take a tablespoon of the dough and press it into a mini cupcake pan. You are essentially making a little shell for your filling. Once the dough is in the cupcake pan, press your thumb in the middle to make an indent. Pop them in the oven for 12-15 minutes. Let them cool while you make your filling.

For the filling, you’ll need peanut butter, honey, yogurt, and corn. Mix together ½ cup of peanut butter, 1 tablespoon of honey, 16oz plain yogurt, ½ cup cooked corn kernels in your food processor. Pour your mixture into the shells and stick them in the freezer for a least 4 hours.

Barkarita and Brew Time!

Remember, even if you’re enjoying a Margarita or Mexican beer on Cinco de Mayo, never feed alcohol to your dog. If you really want your dog to experience the taste of a cerveza (beer), there are companies that create “beer” especially for dogs! One company is called Bowser Beer and their brew is made with human-grade beef, pork or chicken, malt barley (naturally high in Vitamin B) and glucosamine for your dog’s joint health. You can even order custom labels with your dog’s photo on the front!

We also found this cute recipe for “Barkaritas”. Here's what you’ll need:

2 boxes of chicken broth (unsalted)

All you need to do is pour 1 box of chicken broth (unsalted) into ice cube trays and freeze them. On the day of your party, pour ½ cup of room temperature chicken broth into the bottom of your blender. Add your chicken ice cubes on top. Blend, adding more room temperature broth if needed for the right consistency. Their frozen Barkaritas will be done in no time. Garnish it with a thin slice of zucchini or their favorite dog-friendly veggie.

Avoca-no

What’s a Cinco de Mayo party without some guacamole? Along with other foods commonly found at human gatherings, avocados are a no-no for dogs. Avocados contain persin which is highly toxic to many animals. While dogs are more resistant to persin than other animals, avocados are still not safe for dogs. Also, never feed your dog onions, garlic or chives. These are present in a number of Mexican dishes and can be toxic to dogs.

Don’t forget about your human friends!

Delish posted their top 37 recipes for a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta and while they all look amazing, we can't wait to try their slow cooker chicken enchilada queso dip! Also, don’t forget about these Sombrero cookies for dessert.

Dress up for the occasion

If you’re throwing a Cinco de Mayo party, your dog needs to dress the part and as long as she's comfortable with head-gear, a mini Sombrero is perfect. Also, make sure to find a colorful pinata to take photos of your dog with a festive friend!

As always, share your photos with us on Facebook and Instagram. Happy Cinco de Mayo from your friends at Link AKC!
