Dog Friendly Hikes in San Francisco

More dogs than kids live in San Francisco, and that makes for lucky pups. With ocean and bay on three sides, the city has a wealth of dog-friendly trails and Pacific beaches to explore. This is the perfect place to test out the LINK AKC Smart Collar's adventures feature. Snap selfies of your pup with cable cars, Alcatraz or the Golden Gate Bridge as a backdrop.

Check out our choices for the best Bay Area hikes and walking trails, for dogs and their lucky owners.

1. Ocean Beach

A long, wide ribbon beside the Pacific, Ocean Beach gives dogs miles of sand for off-leash fun, plus rings for bonfires, so you can warm up and stay to enjoy the sunset.

2. Crissy Field

At this waterfront park in San Francisco's Marina district, dogs get to romp, splash and play off-leash. Hike west for views of the Golden Gate Bridge, east for boat harbors and sea lions

3. Fort Funston

Dogs love Fort Funston, a former defense installation that's now a national park. It's known to local owners as Doggy Disneyland for all the joy it brings to canines, with off-leash romping along sandy bluffs overlooking the Pacific.

4. Land's End Trail

Land's End Trail starts just above San Francisco's legendary Cliff House and takes you and your dog all the way to Baker Beach. He'll have to be on the leash, but you'll both enjoy the astonishing views of Marin and the Golden Gate Bridge.

5. Marin Headlands

Cross the Golden Gate Bridge and you're in Marin County, home to even more great Bay Area hiking trails where dogs are welcome. The Miwok Trail out of Mill Valley offers eight miles of well-managed paths with views of the Tennessee Valley, Rodeo Lagoon and Rodeo Beach.
